Human-in-the-Loop
At LegalZoom, we operate with a human-in-the-loop model, where AI enhances human judgment rather than replacing it. We believe the strongest outcomes for our customers come from thoughtfully integrating human expertise with AI capabilities to improve accuracy, safety, and decision-making.
To align with our AI-integrated operating model, our interview process will assess AI fluency, curiosity, and measurable/impactful workflow integration.
Overview
LegalZoom's product design team works in code. As a Staff Product Designer (internally, AI UX Designer), you own problems end to end: framing, exploration, prototyping, and handoff to engineering. You build production-quality prototypes yourself and you're the quality call while work is in progress.
Design judgment is the core skill. You define the right problem, explore genuinely different directions, and know which one serves the customer. What distinguishes this role is that you also build: you take your strongest direction to a working prototype rather than handing off a static spec.
This team values range over pedigree. Startup experience, AI-native building, and the ability to move between early-stage ambiguity and scaled execution all carry real weight here.
You Stand Out If
You've worked at a startup and can point to products you shipped that drove measurable customer or business outcomes.
You've been designing and building with AI as your primary toolkit for two or more years, with clear impact on what you delivered.
You work fast through ambiguity: you find the right problem, generate ideas, and get to a working version quickly.
You spot opportunities and act on them, whether that means prototyping an unsolicited concept or picking up a rough idea and making it real.
You've worked at a larger tech company but also have real startup experience, where you operated with fewer resources, less structure, and more ownership.
You will
Frame ambiguous problem spaces and explore genuinely different product directions before converging on one.
Build and ship functional prototypes at production quality using real data and real interactions.
Take features from requirements to shipped experience using AI development tools, contributing directly to front-end implementation.
Identify gaps in the design system and build new patterns and components that integrate with its architecture.
Evaluate AI-generated work against your design intent and refine it directly.
Instrument what you ship so real usage informs the next round of design decisions.
Help the cross-functional team make roadmap trade-offs, using AI to compress the build-test-learn loop without lowering the evidence bar.
Define how AI-powered features in your domain calibrate user trust: when to surface confidence, when to require confirmation, when to show alternatives.
Mentor peers and raise the craft and quality bar for the team.
Coordinate with product, engineering, and brand so what ships holds together across domains.
You have
Strong design fundamentals: you defend a direction with evidence and explore meaningfully different approaches before converging.
Comfort working from ambiguity, before a problem has a spec or a system has documentation.
Sustained, daily experience building with AI development tools (Claude Code or equivalent) as a core part of how you design.
Front-end implementation skills, including the judgment to know when AI-generated code preserves your design intent and the ability to wire components to real data and APIs.
Fluency with Git and GitHub: branches, pull requests, and code review as part of how you ship.
Experience scaffolding prompts and context to keep AI output consistent across a project.
A track record of extending a design system, building what it needs rather than working around what it has.
Clear communication and the ability to influence people who don't report to you.
A strategic perspective: you connect the decision in front of you to where the product and team are headed.
Experience building products from zero to one at a startup, an internal venture, or a small team inside a larger organization.
High autonomy: you scope your own work, make calls with incomplete information, and ship without waiting for perfect conditions.
The salary range for this role is ($140,500-$224,800). Actual compensation offered will depend on several factors including but not limited to: geographic location, work experience, education, skill level, and/or other business and organizational needs.
